Is 8-Bit Minecraft Possible?

What would Minecraft look like if it was programmed for a 1980s 8-Bit computer? To try everything Brilliant has to offer—free—for a full 30 days, visit https://brilliant.org/Inkbox . The first 200 of you will get 20% off Brilliant’s annual premium subscription. Using the power of the Commander X16, a newly released 8-Bit computer I've begun the process of building a brand new 8-Bit block game. Through some heavy programming I designed a chunk loading engine in 6502 assembly. But because there weren't any great tile designing tools for the X16, like YYCHR for the NES, I had to make them myself. The links to my tile maker is available below. However, after designing a chunk rending engine with tiles, I realized that it looked terrible. I tore it out and replaced it with a new method of rending using the X16's bitmap mode. Although it uses more video memory, the isometric blocks look much better. And most of the code from my first attempt could be recycled, so nothing ended up being a waste. More updates are soon to follow so stay tuned. Cool video. Music only in left ear made it hard to watch, though.

Bro I understood every word that you said but literally nothing computed to me… still hooked though and it looks great!

@@patrickbuswell

My left ear like the music. My brain want to stop watching the video #headphones

What

@@bilbo_gamers6417

could you keep a list of blocks that have been deleted or inserted, and render these overtop a basically pre-made graphic of the chunk? this would allow you to only store a bunch of data in places the player was modifying, and you could have a lot more sophisticated graphics without having to render shadows or depth besides just what the player put in. you could put the current blocks the players put on or deleted as a mask that is applied over the current drawn chunk.

@@avramitra

The background music was way too distracting, man :(

I fail to understand why do so many creators ruin their otherwise fantastic content with background musics.

Anyway, thanks for this great content. Subbed. ❤

@@badjasper2881

Really cool idea and video!

ps.

Stopping is only a waste if you haven't learned anything from it though!
Keep it up!

@@salmanbaig3983

8-bit and 16-bit was also for OS (MS-DOS) so all DOS era games are 16-bit or 8-bit

Kiedy obejrzałem ten film to przypomniałem sobie grę na Google Play która była o minecrafcie 2d ale skyblock

Great video, but the music is way to distracting. Struggling to focus on your voice.

5:10 this is also why being a machinist, engineer, welder, blacksmith, or certain kind of woodworker can be incredibly satisfying. Don't have a tool? Make it. Blacksmithing is wizardry if you're used to buying everything

honestly I'm an Electronics major and the only thing I can understand in this video are the hardware the other topics in the other hand are quite hard too understand.

minecraft could be 16 bit tho. I'm pretty sure...?
i mean if the genesis can handle doom then surely it can handle minecraft

@@randomplay-karaokes1238

Great job bro, I'm programming Minecraft in Java with Open GL, like Mojang did but only with my knowledge❤

@@RudometkinYT

Awesome work! I want to see it designed well. Everything should have purpose. It should be simple and well crafted. It should be difficult and rewarding.

@@CandyJoyfulx

what about the first version of minecraft where all you can do is build and break blocks. I say that because I never grew up with 8-Bit and have no idea how much it can handle.

@@swgclips03

i don't know too much about computers, but if i could play this on something like a windows 3.1 or 95 machine, or something even older, that would be so cool. also, if there can be multiplayer, this would be like runescape meets minecraft, i swear, or if it wont work on 8 bit, do the 16 bit sequel to show it off like i saw on another comment
